Sertãozinho was established in 1827 by João Manoel de Pontes, as the Sertãozinho do Mato Dentro Estate. In 1869, Antônio Malaquias Pedroso, considered as the founder of Sertãozinho, erected a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Apparition; Pedroso was a descendant of Felipe Pedroso, one of the discoverers of the miraculous statue at the origin of the sanctuary of Aparecida.
The flag of Sertãozinho is yellow with the municipal coat of arms skewed to the hoist.

The coat of arms of Sertãozinho is prescribed by a Municipal Law adopted on 3 August 1956. Its creation was initiated by the State Representative Antônio Oswaldo do Amaral Furlan*, who commissioned the noted historian and heraldist Enzo Silveira, member of the Heraldry Commission of the São Paulo Institute of History and Geography, of the Brazilian Genealogy Institute, and of several related foreign societies.
"Portuguese, rounded-off shield, surmounted by a mural crown. Per fess, 1a. Or the statue of Our Lady of the Apparition, 1b. Gules two mural crowns argent [or on the image], 2. vert a fess [wavy] argent. The shield supported dexter by a branch of coffee fructed and sinister by a sugarcane the two proper. Beneath the shield a scroll argent inscribed with the motto 'FIDES ET LABOR' surrounded by the dates '10-3-1885' and '5-12-1896' all gules."
The Portuguese, rounded-off shield evokes the history of Brazil and its Lusitanian ascent. Or represents the spiritual and material wealth of the people of Sertãozinho, who contribute so much to the fame of São Paulo and of Brazil. Gules represents the commitment of the people to struggle and intense labour for the sake of the country. Vert is a symbol of the soil's fertility and exuberance.
The statue of Our Lady of the Apparition (see Aparecida) recalls that the town was originally named Arraial de Nossa Senhora Aparecida de Sertãozinho. The two mural crowns represent the two districts of Sertãozinho and Cruz das Posses. The fess wavy represents river Pardo that merges with river Mogi-Guaçú, as well as watercourses Onça and Sertãozinho. The branch of coffee recalls the Paulista labour. Sugar cane is the most important crop in the municipality. The Latin motto reads "Faith and Labour". The dates are those of the establishment of the district and of the municipality, respectively.
