The municipality of Piratuba (4,102 inhabitants in 2017; 14,598 ha) is
located on the border with Rio Grande do Sul, 430 km west of Florianópolis.
Piratuba emerged in 1910 during the building of the São Paulo - Rio Grande
do Sul railways by Brazil Railway, as a camp established for workers on Rio do
Peixe (Fish River). Originally known as Vila do Rio de Peixe, the town was
renamed to Piratuba when elevated a municipality on 18 February 1949.
In
1964, Petobras performed an oil drilling to 2,271 m in depth; instead of
expected oil, sulphur-bearing water gushed forth from a depth of 674 m, at a
temperature of 38.6 °C. The Companhia Hidromineral was established in 1975 to
exploit the water resource; the Piratuba spa makes of Piratuba one of South
Brazil's main tourism spots.
