The municipality of Jaguaruna (19,254 inhabitants in 2016; 32,946 ha) is
located 150 km south-west of Florianópolis.
Jaguaruna emerged as a feudal
domain granted in 1804 to Domingos Fernandes de Oliveira. Colonel Luiz Francisco
Pereira, coming from Plahoça, settled the place in 1867. He was joined the next
year by Joaquim Marques, Francisco Rebelo, Manoel Marques and other colonists
coming from Garopaba and Aratingaúba.
The municipality of Jaguaruna was
established by Provincial Law No. 38 promulgated on 6 January 1891, separating
from Laguna. Suppressed on 30 August 1923, the municipality was re-established
by State Decree No. 25 issued on 11 December 1930.

Heraldic elucidation.
Shield: Known as Iberian, with the point formed by a semi-circle, in use in
Portugal, namely at the time of Brazil's discovery and colonization. According
to our heraldists, this is the best emblem for Brazilian towns. In Brazilian
heraldry, it evokes the origin of the race to which Portuguese contributed as
the main element.
Mural crown: With four towers, this is the proper and
consecrated emblem of municipalities and of their administrative autonomy.
Motto: "Jaguaruna" on a yellow scroll.
Date: "20.12.1930", as the date of
political emancipation of the municipality.
Cassava and rice plants:
Represent the municipality's main crops.
Two stylized black jaguar's heads: A
tribute to the municipality's name, which means "Black jaguar" in Tupi-Guarani.
Two stylized tridents crossed over a stylized net and a white background:
Represent one of the municipality's sources of income, fishing. The trident is
the scepter of Neptune, King of the Sea.
Stylized sun over stylize waves:
Represents the beaches located in the municipality, which will be in the future
a source of income.
