The municipality of Cerrito (6,461 inhabitants in 2016; 45,189 ha) is located 320 km south-west of Porto Alegre.

The flag of Cerrito is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 273 promulgated on 23
July 2001.
Article 2.
The flag of the municipality of Cerrito shall
have as its official colors red, yellow and green, arranged in three diagonal
stripes, the first red, the second yellow and the third green, representing:
I. Red: The people's work force;
II. Yellow: The municipality's
socio-economical potential;
III. Green: The beauty of the forests.
In
the center of the yellow diagonal stripe is placed the coat of arms of the
municipality, of 7 units in width, inscribed "Terra de Amigos" [Land of the
Friends].
Article 3.
I. The width of the flag shall be of 12 units.
II. The length of the flag shall be of 18 units.
III. The diagonal stripes
shall be arranged as follows: the central yellow stripe runs from the 9th unit
of the inner lateral part to the 14th until of the upper part, while the other
runs, in right line, from the 4th unit of the lower part to the 13th unit of the
outer part.

Article 2.

In the
center of the yellow diagonal stripe is placed the coat of arms of the
municipality, of 7 units in width on 6 units in length, without the writing
"Terra de Amigos".
Article 3.
III. The red, yellow and green stripes
shall be arranged as follows: the central yellow stripe runs from the 7th unit
of the inner lateral part to the angle of the 18th unit of the upper part, while
the other runs, in right line, from the 10th unit of the lower part to the 6th
unit of the outer lateral part.

center with the municipal coat of arms inscribed in a white oval.

The coat of arms of
Cerrito is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 176 promulgated on 27 October 1999.
Article 1.
I. A Portuguese shield bordered and divided in black; above
the horizontal division an animal (bovine) of Jersey cattle, looking at
[heraldic] right, in the background a greenish hill under a sun rising in a blue
sky.
II. Beneath the horizontal line, divided into two parts by a vertical
line :
III. In the [heraldic] right part, a river with sandy banks, in the
background trees under a blue sky.
IV. In the [heraldic∏ left part, a
potter's oven, a parchment superimposed with a quill, on a grey-bluish
background.
V. Beneath the shield a scroll or inscribed in the central part
with the name of the municipality surrounded by the official date of
promulgation of the State Decree that elevated Cerrito to the rank of
municipality, 28/12/1995.
VI. The shield surrounded by a maize plant with
yellow cobs surmounting plants of bean with light green pods and dark green
leaves.
VII. The shield surmounted by a three-towered mural crown or outlined
in black.
VIII. Beneath the scroll the writing "terra de amigos".

The Jersey cow, featured on the coat of arms,
was proclaimed a municipal symbol by Municipal Law No. 961 promulgated on 1
April 2013.

Latin America imported its first Jerseys
before the turn of the century. Records show that around 1892, the first cattle
went to Guatemala. Brazil had its first Jerseys four years later. But it was
probably Costa Rica that first imported the breed to Central and South America
in 1873.
Today, the Jersey breed is the second largest breed of dairy cattle
in the world. On Jersey itself there are fewer than 6,000 Jerseys in total with
nearly 4,000 of these being adult milking cows. The purity of the breed on the
island is maintained by a strict ban on imports. This ban has been in place for
some 150 years. There are no other breeds of the cattle on the island.
Jerseys are well known for their milk, which is noted for its high quality - it
is particularly rich in protein, minerals and trace elements. It is also rich in
color which is naturally produced from carotene, an extract from grasses. The
Jerseys has an ability to adapt to many kinds of climates, environments and
management practices.
