The municipality of Mato Rico (3,822 inhabitants in 2010; 39,453 ha) is
located 300 km west of Curitiba.
Mato Rico was established in 1944 on the
right bank of river Mato Rico by Salomão Ferreira da Luz, aka Salomão Raposo. He
was a descendant of the famous Paulista pioneer Antonio Raposo Tavares, the
namesake of the road that connects São Paulo to North Paraná.
The
municipality of Mato Rico was established by State Law No. 9,563 promulgated on
31 January 1991, separating from Pitanga.
The flag and arms of Mato Rico
are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 19 promulgated on 19 November 1993.
Article 2.
The flag of the municipality of Mato Rico shall be rectangular, in
proportions 14 units in width on 20 units in length, in accordance with Article
5 of Federal Law No. 5,700, with the following features.
a) The flag consists
of two equal fields in green, both in the shape of a scalene right-angled
triangle.
b) The white stripe, 8 units in width, which separates the
triangles, runs from the upper right (host side) to the lower left corner.
c)
On the white stripe, in the center of the flag, the coat of arms of the
municipality of Mato Rico is applied, which symbolizes the municipal government.
Article 5.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Mato Rico, designed
under the coordination of Encyclopedia Simbológica Municipalista Paranaense -
ESIMPAR, is composed of a Samnite shield, in proportions 7 units in length by 8
units in width, divided in three parts, with the following characteristics.
a) Upper part of the shield
The shield's upper field, separated in two lower
fields by a wavy stripe, features three green terrain elevations, indicating the
predominance of mountainous soil in the region. In this green area stand five
Brazilian pine trees (_Araucaria angustifolia_) proper, with the 2nd and 4th
trees close to the wavy stripe and the others in perspective. These indicate the
abundance of forests in the municipality. Between the first and the the second
land elevation, from right to left, a rising sun proper, which symbolizes Mato
Rico's people who renews himself at each dawn. On the elevations, the firmament
is depicted in blue.
b) Wavy stripe
Starting horizontally from the 4th
unit, a wavy stripe 1/2 unit in width, blue, separates the upper field from the
lower fields. This stripe represents the hydrography of the municipality of Mato
Rico.
c) Shield content
The lower part of the shield is vertically divided
by a black outline forming two equal fields.
The lower right, green field
features in the center a standing black ox, with the body turned to the right
and the head turned to the front. It symbolizes work and represents the town's
thriving livestock resources.
The lower left, brown field features in the
center, a farmer, in white, holding a plow drawn by a horse, in black, plowing
the land. It represents the cultivation of the soil, an expanding activity in
the Municipality.
d) Additional shield's symbol
a) Crown
The shield is
surmounted by a six-towered mural crown argent (silver), only four of them
visible, with the black gates, representing the municipal authority.
b)
Supporters
The shield of the municipality of Mato Rico is supported on its
right side by a maize plant fructed and, on its left side, by a cotton plant,
the two proper. Beneath the shield a bean plant proper. They represent the main
agricultural resources of the municipality.
c) Scroll
At the lower end of
the shield a yellow scroll is inscribed in black with "31-1 - MATO RICO - 1991",
which means, respectively, the town's date of creation and toponym.
d) Colors
Blue is the color of the firmament. It symbolizes justice, truth, loyalty and
beauty.
Green denotes faith. It symbolizes hope, freedom, strength of nature.
Yellow is the image of maturity of judgment. It symbolizes nobleness, magnitude
and wealth.
White is pure light. It symbolizes integrity, obedience,
vigilance, peace and order.
Black belongs to the domain of intelligence. It
symbolizes prudence, vigor and honesty.
Brown represents the earth. Its
symbology is identified with the virtues and qualities described for black.
