The flag of the Uruguayan Football Association (Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol AUF.) is clearly inspired by the nine white and blue stripes of the Pabellon Nacional (the Uruguayan National Flag), and by the red diagonal of the Artigas' Flag. The flag has the acronym of the association (A.U.de F.) in white letters, inside the red diagonal.

Uruguayan football national team colors

«How come then that the Uruguayan football national team wears celeste jerseys?». After some research I found that in 1910, in Buenos Aires, just before a football match between the national teams of both countries [Uruguay and Argentina], it happened that both teams were about to wear white clothing. To avoid confusions, it was agreed that the Uruguayans would wear celeste, while the locals would keep their white shirts. Those were the distinctive colours of our respective national teams. The Uruguayan football teams (national team only), wear the celeste to this day. The Argentineans, instead, later changed their colour to a vertical striped shirt, alternating blue (darker than celeste) [thus inversely of their respective national flags].

The National Football Team of Uruguay is popularly known as "La Celeste" for the color of their jerseys. The team was the Champion of the World Cups of 1930 and 1950.
