As a part of this
year’s June 8 Flag Day event, Medina Township trustees held a township flag
design contest. The township’s residents were given the opportunity to vote for
which of the submitted flag designs they like best. Medina Township resident
Robert Erikson was voted as having the best design and in addition to receiving
a $50 savings bond and a flag of his own design, his flag will be flown at
Blakslee Park and Medina Township Town Hall for the next year.
At the Aug. 29 Medina Township Trustees meeting, officials debuted
a full-sized flag of Erikson’s design and gave him an opportunity to explain his
concept.
“The flag is blue based on the original Connecticut flag,
because Medina Township was sectioned off from the original Connecticut Western
Reserve,” Erikson said. “The ‘O’ is for the great state of Ohio, mimicking the
‘O’ from (the word) Ohio and the stripes mimic the state flag of Ohio as well.
(The words) Medina Township says who we are and who we’ve come to be, and the
four stars are for the four elected officials of the township, three trustees
and the fiscal officer.”
The presented flag will be flown in the township
until next year’s Flag Day event.
