Officials order county flags
By Linda Martz
News Journal

MANSFIELD -- Richland County Commissioners hope they have ordered 25 county flags in time for one of the flags to fly at the state Capitol during Ohio's bicentennial celebration. Commissioners voted Tuesday to spend $860 for three 3-foot by 5-foot flags showing the logo county residents selected earlier this year at the county fair and libraries. The winning logo contains the words "Richland County" with an apple to recognize Johnny Appleseed who spent some time in this region. Counties were given a Dec. 31 deadline to turn in their flag to the state's bicentennial commission.

Commissioners initially had planned to purchase 12 flags to fly them at the Capitol, county courthouse and other county buildings. "I would hope each county agency and the fairgrounds would purchase one," Commissioner Bob Ashbrook said. However, they decided to order more when they looked at prices, which worked out to $52.15 per flag for a dozen, or $42.75 each if more are ordered. "There ought to be some citizens that want one," Commissioner Dave Swartz said.

Designed in 2002 at the request of the Ohio Bicentennial Commission, this white flag features the name of the county. The apple reminds us of John Chapman or "Johnny Appleseed," who crossed the area planting apple trees in the 1800's. Richland County was established in 1808. It was named because of the rich soil found there.
