North Tonawanda started a flag contest in June 2024 to replace a flag adopted in 1967. A total of 32 designs were received from 20 local artists, and 8 finalists chosen by the flag committee were submitted to public votings in 2025. The winning flag was designed by Jeremy Sniatecki, a graphic designer who grew up in North Tonawanda. The flag was unveiled on July 8, 2025.
The focal point of the flag is a large anchor that represents the city’s canal heritage. Behind the anchor is a sunrise to symbolize the revitalization of the downtown and waterfront areas. In front of the anchor is a silhouette of a carousel horse, representing the many carousels manufactured in the Herschell Carrousel Factory. Behind the anchor are the Erie Canal, the counterweight railroad bridge, which represents the city’s history of industry and railroads, and the Wurlizter Building, which was home to the famous manufacturer of musical organs.
