TED (website), headquartered in Çankaya (Ankara), was established on 31 January 1928 as the Turkish Education Society (Türk Maarif Cemiyeti). Granted state approval by the Council of Ministers on 12 December 1939, the association was renamed to Turkish Education Association in 1946.
The main purpose of TED is stated in the association's first Charter:
"The association does not have any political goals, but only works to support education and accomplishment of the youth of the country".
TED is of straightforward Kemalist, republican and secular inspiration. Its reference is the speech given on 1 November 1925 by AtatÜrk at the opening of the Grand National Assembly, emphasizing the role of education in the the modernization of Turkey and urging private initiative to thrive.
The missions of TED are:
- To establish schools providing education in Turkish and foreign languages and to open dormitories for the purpose of catering students;
- To train high quality students in the schools it manages;
- To give scholarships to successful children across the country, whose financial means are not sufficient, to allow them to continue their education;
- To create scientific platforms that will carry Turkish educational standards to modern levels;
- To raise awareness of the society on the problems and solutions of the education system through research projects;
- To have a say in the formation of Turkish education policy.
TED manages the TED University (TED Üniversitesi), 39 K-12 schools (from kindergarten through 12th grade) in Turkey and another one in North Cyprus, and 4 dormitories.

The emblem of TED, adopted in 1929, features on a blue background a red torch with a white handle, emphasizing the association's goal, surrounded by five white stars - one on the left and four on the right - representing the five members of the first board of the association, inscribed with a yellow crescent pointing upwards, charged with the association's name in blue capital letters.

The institutes managed by TED uses the same emblem, with appropriate writing. As a general rule, the flag used in official places - school's premises, director's office - and formal events - graduation ceremonies, conferences, official receptions) is blue but there are many exceptions to this. The "official" flag is sometimes white, red, or diagonally divided red-blue. Different designs can also coexist.
In less formal contexts (sports competitions, school trips), the schools use a high diversity of flags. Flags horizontally divided red-blue seem to be specifically used in sports events.
