The Bear Flag (“bears” being gay men with an appreciation for hirsute partners) is displayed more discretely than the Rainbow Gay Pride Flag. They are usually seen tacked to the wall or flown just inside the door at bars, nightclubs, and conventions which cater to that type of clientele.

The Bear Pride Flag shown above is from Spags, a Seattle bear bar. The colors of the flag represent the earth and the various bears that live between the sky and the ground. The golden yellow paw shaped sun represents the spirit and brotherhood of bears all over the world. The blue stripe represents the sky; white for polar bears; black for black bears; brown for
brown bears; and green for Earth.

This flag was created in 1992 by Steve Heyl and Jim Maxwell, members of the Front Range Bears club from Denver, Colorado. It was trademarked, but also released into the public domain. Although mostly replaced by the International Bear Brotherhood Flag, it is still occasionally used. Steve Heyl has explained the design as follows: "The colors in the flag were designed to show the range of bears, represented by the various colors (White, Golden, Grey, Brown & Black), and the fact that bears tend to do things a bit differently, represented by the stripes at an angle."
