Coat of arms

[Sapataria commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 5 Feb 2008

The arms are Vert a windmill wheel Or dressed and roped Argent and in chief two boots Or respectant and base wavy of four fesses Argent and Azure. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "SAPATARIA - SOBRAL DE MONTE AGRAÇO".
Meaning:
The arms are partly canting, as the boots stand for the toponym, meaning "shoe shop", i.e. in the modern meaning of a place where one can buy shoes (previous meaning might be cobbler's shop, mostly for repair); this toponym is a constant source of amusement for unaware users of the local railroad (western route Lisbon - Torres - Caldas - Leiria - Figueira), where it is not the only train stop with a funny name. The remaining charges have trivial meanings, i.e., local river Sizandro and once locally important traditional windmills at hilltops, which are typical but hardly exclusive.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 5 Feb 2008

Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República: III Série in 2001.08.06.
