Arez Commune (until 2013)

It is a fairly typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a blue and yellow quartered field (town rank).

The arms are Or an olive branch Vert fruited Sable between two heraldic fountains and in chief a cross Vert fleury (Avis Order Cross). Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "AREZ"
Meaning:
The fountains stand for the local Fadagosa springs and spa. (The English blazon above is a direct translation from the official text, although the arms in use have the branch and the cross simply placed in pale, forming a cross with the two fountains.)

Shield Sable, an embattled tower Or masoned Sable with port and windows Gules, flanked by two paly olive branches Argent fruited Or. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "AMIEIRA DO TEJO".
