Meaning:
Mascarenhas, like oddly several other names of communes in Mirandela (Bouça, Franco, Múúrias, Passos, and Pereira), is a surname, and a fairly common one. The Portuguese lineage of this surname was indeed based on the namesake village, in the late 12th century (see here; its arms are Gules three barrulets Or, not reflected in the communal arms, but its crest, a lion rampant Gules langued and animated Or, is.
