Coat of arms

[Cortiços commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 10 Apr 2016

The shield is Argent a beehive Sable with its linen sash Or between two flax flowers Azure seeded Or, in chief a mitre Gules padded and garnished Or. Mural crown Argent "according to the law", i.e.with three visible towers, and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CORTIÇOS".
Meaning:
The quartered pattern of the flag is unexpected for a commune seated in a village. I suspect that this has to do with the fact that this settlement used to have the status of town and lost it somewhere in the 19th century, but I don’t know any details yet. "Cortiços" means "honeycombs" or "beehives": the arms are partly canting.
