Toruń (German: Thorn) is in Toruń county, 170 km NW of Warsaw. It is
on the Vistula river with (1981) 180.052 inhabitants, the birthplace of
the astronomer Copernicus. It was founded by Teutonic Knights 1231 and
received town rights 1233; member of the Hanseatic League; to kingdom of
Poland 1454; two treaties signed here (1411, 1466) by which Poland gained
territory; occupied by Charles XII of Sweden 1703; to Prussia 1793; part
of grandduchy of Warsaw 1807-1815; returned to Prussia 1815; to Poland
1919; in World War II occupied by Germans 1939-44. Flag from this

A little correction of the Toruń City flag:
The angel on the city flag of Toruń Town still carries a key. Toruń
City - flag adopted on 15 Apr1999.
