The coat of arms was approved by the royal resolution of 7 November 1924. It
was drawn by Miss C. Aubert (as given in [c2j87]
and also copied at
http://www.arendal.kommune.no/Om-Arendal/Byvapenet/ ) after a draft by Fred.
Barth (I know of Frederik Barth, a Norwebian anthropologist, but he was born
around this time...)
[c2j87] provides no Norwegian blazon, but a
description that "it depicts a cruiser, a three masted ship of the 18th century
type, on three waves".
In the 18th century the town's militia had a flag showing a similar arms withotu
the waves and since 1820's a seal depicts such with ship on sea and in base the
crowned Norwegian coat of arms between some trees. This was initialy used on the
seal of a government official (therefore the state arms), but was afterwards
taken as the town coat of arms. Eventually, in connection with the bicentenary
marked in 1923 a new design was adopted.
A good depiction of the pre-1924 coat of arms is shown at
