During the term of Macedonio Herrera (1965-1967), a call for submissions was held for the design of the coat of arms under the Carnival of 1967. Its jury was composed of Roberto Nahle Hernández, Ignacio García Dueñas, Héctor Hernández García, Enrique Badillo Alemán, and Obdulio Arroyo Cerrillo. On 7 January 1967, the proposal by Dr. Abel Concepción Zapata Ibarra was chosen as the Municipal Coat of Arms. However, the Coat of Arms took its final form on 8 October 1981, under the Council of 1980-1981 presided by Alejandro Hernández and José Luis Molina Calderón, which asked the Government of the State to recognize a new version of their coat of arms as official. It made the coat of arms into the format of a seal. Information gratefully received from the Municipal Chronicler.
In its outer ring, at the top the name, "RIO GRANDE, ZAC." To the sides are branches, the right of a corn plant for agriculture and left a laurel branch for victory, tied together in a ribbon. The inner ring is a blue field. Over it is a scrolled shield, reading the motto at the top "UNION TRABAJO PROGRESO" [Union, Work, Progress]. In the upper section over red for work, there is a hand holding each item, from left to right: a hammer for building, book for education, and cob of corn for agriculture, representing the worker, intellectual, and farmer united. To the lower-left, over a blue field for the sky are three corn plants and a cattle head, remembering the economic base of the municipality. To the lower-right over white for peace, an image of the Santa Elena de la Cruz church for faith.
