In 1986, governor Genaro Borrego Estrada asked the municipalities to adopt a municipal coat of arms. Municipal President Héctor Giacomán Pérez asked local artists to participate in its design. Although the state called off the idea due to a lack of participation from most municipalities, the council adopted the design by José García as the Municipal Coat of Arms, being used for the first time in 1987. Serving as supporters are an Indian (left) and Spaniard (right), remembering the colonization of the area. At the bottom is a ribbon reading "CON EL TRABAJO AVANZAMOS HACIA EL PROGRESO" [With Work We Advance Towards Progress]. Above the shield is a miner's helmet and leaves, remembering the Mining Industry. The upper section of the shield depicts the local San Miguel Arcángel Church, with night represented to the left and day to the right. The lower section depicts a mound of sand (environment), cob of corn in its husk and valley ploughed by a man in a tractor (agriculture) and head of cattle (cattle-raising industry).
