The municipality of Ciruelos (532 inhabitants in 2018; 2,294 ha; municipal website) is located on the border with the Community of Madrid, is located 50 km north-east of Toledo, 20 km west of Ocaña, and 20 km south of Aranjuez.
Ciruelos was named for Latin ceratum, "waxy", referring to the color of the fertile land, which has been dedicated to the cultivation of grain, grapevine and olive for ages. Originally recorded in the 9th century as Perusa, the village was subsequently known as Cirilos (12th century), Ceruela / Ciruelas (17th century), Cirolillos / Ciruelos (late 17th century).
Ciruelos, first recorded in 803, was donated by Alfonso VII to Pelayo Pérez de Fromista and Pedro Díaz Marrón, who subsequently transferred the village to Fitero Raimundo, the founder and first MAster of the Order of Calatrava.
In the 12th century, Ciruelos was part of the town of Otos, granted in 1132 by Alfonso VII to Haym Avenzadoch and Aleazar. Chronicles report that in 1157 the Order of Calatrava owned half of the town, the other part belonging to Ben Judá, who offerred it to Alfonso VII. The king swapped his part of the town with the Order for Illescas , which allowed the Order to control the whole town. In 1176, the king transfered the castle of Ciruelos to the Order.
