Symbols of Barcience

The flag and arms of Barcience are prescribed by Order No. 158 issued on 6 August 2019 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 8 September 2019 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 178, p. 38,467 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Panel in proportions 2:3, composed of two equal vertical stripes. At hoist, white with a red lion rampant. At fly, green with a yellow tower with green windows.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Argent a lion rampant gules langued and armed of the same, 2. Vert a tower or masoned sable. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The lion and tower undoubtedly refers to the castle that overlooks the village.
An earlier fortress was erected in Barcience in the 11th-12th centuries by the Order of Saint James. A next owner, the Silva lineage, completely rebuilt the castle in the 15th century, as a fortified castle-palace.
The castle had an outer enclosure, a moat and a drawbridge. Besides parts of two small, round towers, nothing remains of this outer enclosure. The castle itself has a rectangular ground plan with towers at its corners. The gate in the eastern wall is protected by the square, projecting keep beside it. The other tower on the east side is also square while the western towers are circular.
The east side of the keep is fitted with a large stone carving of a standing lion; the coat of arms of the Silva family. The keep is made of rubble-work masonry with ashlars at its corners. All the walls survive up to their original height. There is a spiral stair in the northeast tower but this has partially collapsed. The interior of the castle is completely empty although there are some vestiges of walls near the north wall.
