Presentation of Vegaviana

The municipality of Vegaviana (864 inhabitants in 2019; 2,306 ha) is located 90 km north-west of Cáceres and 25 km north-west of Coria.

Vegaviana was established in the 1950s by the National Institute of Colonization 5 km of Moraleja, to house 2,000 settlers. The oak woods were replaced by arable plots irrigated from the new Borbollón dam. The architect Fernández del Amo designed white houses, as a "serene" architecture, and kept part of the local vegetation. The village is composed of 340 houses for the colonists, with a yard and farming-oriented dependencies, and some 50 collective houses for day laborers. In the center of the village were built the church and presbytery, the Town Hall, a multi-use social building, a school, shops and a medical booth.

The submunicipal entity of Vegaviana was established by Decree No. 80, issued on 22 June 1993 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 29 June 1993 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 76, p. 1,942 (text). The separation process was initiated on 29 September 1992 by the Municipal Council of Moraleja and validated on 25 May 1993 by the Council.
The municipality of Vegaviana was established by Decree No. 144, issued on 19 June 2009 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 25 June 2009 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 121, p. 18,441-18,443 (text).

Flag of Vegaviana

The flag (photo) and arms of Vegaviana, adopted on 14 April 2005 by the (then) Village Council and validated on 23 March 2006 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 27 March 2006 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 8 April 2006 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 42, pp. 6,232-6,233 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Composed of five horizontal stripes, the first and the fifth, red, 2/8 of the flag's width, the second and the fourth, white, 1/8 of the flag's width, the third, green, 2/8 of the flag's width.
Coat of arms: Spanish shield. Vert seven houses argent roofed gules in bend cantonned in chief by a holly oak or and a lion rampant of the same and in base by three bend wavy argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The village's mayor, Juan Caro, explained that green represents the irrigated area, orange red the roofs and white the white-washed houses of the village.
On the coat of arms, the lion represents Moraleja.
