Hohenpeißenberg Coat of Arms

Shield Azure an eradicated beech Argent superimposed by hammer and mallet Argent hafted Or in saltire.
Meaning:
The beech is a differentiation of the arms of Augustine Rottenbuch Convent, which displayed a red beech on a silver shield. As a place of pilgrimage Hohenpeißenberg was connected with the convent by close relationships. The convent was not only an important manorial lord. It also built a chapel in 1516, later a hospital and since 1772 a famous observatory. It was rebuilt in 1780 as first meteorological observatory world wide. Hammer and mallet are referring to the local black coal mining since 1837. The headquarters moved from the village to nowadays Peißenberg in 1876. Mining flourished in the 1960ies but was finished in 1971. The tinctures white and blue are those of Bayern.
