Meaning:
The first city seal is known by prints since 1405. It already displayed, like any later seals, the canting bear (German: Bär) on a meadow (German:Au). The inescutcheon displays the arms of the Wittelsbach kin, the local rulers. The 1st seal had a circumscription "Bernovia servat comitatui fidem palatino" (Bärnau serves the Palatine County with faithfulness). In 1568 the bear had been brown on a golden background. In 1819 the inescutcheon was omitted and the background tincture turned to blue. The oldest version was restored by Otto Hupp.
