Shield Sable, a decollated bear's head Argent tongued Gules with cut edge Gules.
Meaning:
The namesake Franconian castle is the ancestral seat of the Lords of Egloffstein, later upgraded to counts. The castle became a fiefdom of the Archbishopric of Bamberg in 1509 but the kin remained owner of the castle. Beneath the castle a settlement developed. It gained the rights of a market town in 1959. The town applied for the adoption of the Egloffstein family arms, but the tinctures had to be counterchanged. The flag colours are the Franconian colours.
