Per pale Sable a crown Or garnished Gules issuant from it a demi-swan Argent beaked of the Second; Azure a coupeau Vert surmounted by a barrulet wavy of the Second and issuant from it a tower* also of the Second roofed of the Third and windowed of the First.

The flag and arms are those of the von Schönenbüel family, they commemorate the first Landammann elected by the people, Hermann von Schönenbüel. He was the first to campaign for independence from the abbot of St. Gallen.

Azure issuant from a coupeau of three Vert surmounted by a barrulet wavy Argent a tower of this Last roofed Gules and windowed Sable.

The tower represents Rachenstein castle, built around 1080 by Ulrich III, prince-abbot of St. Gallen. It served as a place of refuge for him during times of war. It was destroyed during the Appenzell Wars by the people of Schwende.
