"Club Bolo Danse Country Montréal" was founded on 5 February 1994. The sole gay and lesbian country dance club in Canada, the club, with a membership of 160, joined the "International Association of Gay & Lesbian Country & Western Dance Clubs" in June 1997. (Club History page).
The club flag, sold as a table flag, is yellow with a "wheel" made of a red ring, five "spokes" made of five blue boots each charged with a yellow triangle and a central red disk. (http://www.clubbolo.com/EN/BoloStore.html [link no longer available]).
Designed by Paul Board and produced by Flag Tech, the flag is explained on a bilingual leaflet as follows:
The boots
The form of the cowboy boot was taken directly from the Club Bolo logo where the boot replaces the letter ‘L’ in ‘BOLO’. Movement to the right is more traditional (for example, we read a text from left to right). The boots on the flag ‘dance’ to the left, against the current, representing an alternative life style practiced by those who frequent Club Bolo. The decoration on the boots, a triangle, represents the gay population that Club Bolo serves. The five triangles suggest a sheriff’s badge (a five pointed star), another western symbol. The five boots also represent the five categories of people that frequent the club: gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, trans-sexual and hetero-sexual.
The wheel
The red circular band suggests another western symbol, the wheel of a wagon, with the boots serving as the spokes of the wheel.
While the boots walk to the left, the wheel turns in the opposite direction, to the right and the direction of dance on the dance floor. As well, the wheel represents the movement of the dancers.
The colours
The boots are blue, the same colour as the boots of the Club Bolo logo. The background of the flag is yellow, the color of joy and gaiety. The red is the colour of passion, reminding us of the passion we feel for dance.
The blue, red and yellow are the three primary colours, and we can combine them to create all the colours of the rainbow (a symbol of the gay community).
