The community

Fort Simpson, with a population of 1257 (as of 1996), was formerly called by the traditional name of Liidlii Koe (meaning "place where rivers come together" -- canting), is located at 61°51'N lat. and 121°22'W long., on the upper course of the Mackenzie river. Local languages are South Slavey and English, and the community belongs to the electoral district of Nahendeh and to land claim area of Deh Cho Treaty 11.

Description of the flag

A 2:3:2 blue-white-blue triband with the shield centred. The shield is divided in three by a bifurcated blue river, on the sides are green fields, the sinister bearing a moose head, the dexter a white native octagonal symbol. Below is a yellow field with a green spruce. The chief is divided dancetty as a blue sky over a range of brown mountains. Over the shield is a brown beaver. Overlapping the base of the shield is the name in English and Slavey.

Maroon version

[Fort Simpson] image by Antonio Martins

Unequal triband of dark maroon, white and dark maroon (might be black instead) charged on the white area with a local badge. This badge is coat-of-arms-like and can be blazoned as "tierced per mantel vert, vert and sable, a pall azure over all; on the I, a moose head argent, on the II a mountain avens, on the III a spruce, chief wavy azure over argent per dancety; as crest a beaver proper; motto 'Village of Fort Simpson' on yellow 'scroll'".

This flag was apparently used in error in place of a blue-white-blue flag both at the original Vancouver Expo '86 display, and subsequently in a flag display of all NWT community flags in Yellowknife. Shane Thompson, MLA for Nahendeh, which includes Fort Simpson, has arranged to have the correct flag replace the maroon version.
