Description of the flag

The town of Okotoks, Alberta (estimated population: 17,145) is located 18 km south of Calgary and is this province's second fastest growing municipality.

The name of this Town is derived from the Blackfoot word "okatoks" which means "rock" and refers to a large boulder located 7 km West of the Town which was deposited by retreating glaciers some 10,000 years ago.

The municipal flag of Okotoks reflects this community's ongoing commitment to sustainable development. The flowing water of the Sheep River, bird (kingfisher?) and motto "Historic Past, Sustainable Future" sends out the message about the need to protect the environment.
