The municipality of Massaranduba (14,668 inhabitants in 2010; 37,330 ha) is located 175 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Massaranduba is named for the tropical tree Persea pyrifolia Nees, locally known as pau-de-andrade, massaranduba or maçaranduba.

Description of the Flag

An upright yellow cross with brown outlined rice grains on it on a blue field, and in the centre the municipal arms.

The flag and arms of Massaranduba are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 7 promulgated on 16 October 1975.

Article 2.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Massaranduba is of rounded-off shape, aka "Portuguese", with the following composition: Per pale, dexter (viewer's left) argent (or white) and sinister (viewer's right), red; superimposed, a chevron, red dexter and argent (or white) sinister; the chevron's angle superimposed with a stylized massaranduba fruit dexter white (or argent) and sinister red. A five-towered mural crown argent. A white scroll [...] inscribed with "MASSARANDUBA" in black letters.

Article 3.
A rectangular flag, with the proportions of the national flag and the following composition: A celestial blue field, a yellow cross charged by another, of the same color, composed of rice grains. Superimposed, the coat of arms, with argent substituted by white and or substituted by yellow.

Article 4.
The proportions of the shield are 4.5 units in length on 6 units in width. The chevron, square, has a width of 1.5 unit, an angle of 90 degrees and its point is distant of 1.5 unit from the shield's upper edge. The massaranduba fruit is circular, 1.5 unit in diameter, its peduncle has a maximal width of 0.3 unit, being located in the upper part. The crown is composed of a smooth rim, of 0.5 unit, above it, a mural rim, also of 0.5 unit. The towers are 1.5 unit in height [...] The scroll is 0.7 unit in length, forming, from point to point, an arc of 53 degrees; the part between the two points inscribed with "MASSARANDUBA" forms an arc of 43 degrees [...]
The proportions of the flag are 20 units in length on 14 units in width. The cross' arms reach the flag's edges and are 2 units in width; the central part of each arms, composed of rice grains, is 1 unit in width. The shield measures 10.5 units, from the central tower's upper point to the scroll's lower edge; it is centered so that the chevron's upper edge matches the lower edge of the cross' horizontal arm.

Article 6.
The symbolic meaning of the coat of arms and of the flag is as follows.
The shield's shape is universal for Brazilian municipalities.
The mural crown is proper to municipalities.
The red and black colors are derived from the flag of Santa Catarina state.
The chevron represents the rectitude of the inhabitants of Massaranduba, unalterable like a square.
The fruit alludes to the municipality's name.
Blue represents the inhabitant's creative skills.
The cross represents the main crop (rice) spreading to the main compass directions, and Christian religion.
Or symbolizes people's nobleness.
The scroll, through its simplicity, is a convenient means of identification.
