The municipality of Botuverá (4,032 inhabitants; 30,302 ha) is located 150 km
of Florianópolis.
Botuverá was established in May 1876, as Porto Franco,
by 33 Italian families, who sailed on river Itajaí-Mirim from Águas Claras,
using canoes and rafts.
The municipality of Botuverá was established by State
Law No. 821 promulgated on 7 May 1962, separating from Brusque.

The flag of Botuverá is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 20 promulgated on 12
August 1972.
Article 2.
The flag of the municipality shall have
colors representative of the mining, agricultural and [...] resources existing
in the municipality. Yellow represents gold; green represents the forest
reserves; gray represents limestone; and white represents peace.

On the coat of arms, the hand represents God's blessing, while the
cross represents people's religious feeling. The mountains crossed by the river
represent a valley rich in natural resources. The trees represent forest and
timber used by the population as a source of income. The shining hearts
represent people's unity. The tobacco branch represents agriculture.
