The municipality of Rebouças (14,991 inhabitants in 2021; 48,184 ha) is located
180 km west of Curitiba.
The flag and arms of Rebouças are prescribed by
Municipal Law No. 251 promulgated on 24 October 1973.
Article 6.
The
municipal flag of Rebouças, designed by heraldist Arcinás Antônio Peixoto de
Faria, shall be divided in three stripes, with the blue, lateral stripes of 5
units in width and the central white one of 4 units, superimposed with a red
stripe of 1 module that starts from the vertex of a white isosceles triangle
placed along the hoist, where the municipal coat of Arms is applied.
§1. In
accordance with the canons and rules of Portuguese heraldry, from which we
inherited the tradition, municipal flags shall be divided in eight, six, four or
three parts, having the same colors as those used in the shield's field and
bearing in the center or at hoist a geometric figure where the municipal coat of
arms is applied.
§2. The municipal flag of Rebouças obeys this general rule,
being divided in three parts. The coat of arms applied to the flag represents
the municipal government while the white isosceles triangle where it is
contained represents the town as the seat of the municipality. The triangle is
the heraldic symbol of liberty, equality and fraternity, according to the
principles of the French Revolution; white is a symbol of peace, work,
friendship, prosperity, purity, and religious spirit. The central white stripe,
superimposed with a red one represents the irradiation of the municipal power
that expands to all parts of the territory; the red color symbolizes dedication,
patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity, courage, and bravery. The blue stripes
represent the rural properties existing in the municipal territory; the blue
color is a symbol of justice, nobleness, perseverance, zeal and loyalty.
Article 7.
In compliance with heraldic rules, the municipal flag shall have
the official dimensions prescribed for the national flag, 14 units in width on
20 units in length.
Article 19.
The coat of arms of Rebouças, designed
by heraldist Arcinás Antônio Peixoto de Faria, is described in proper heraldic
terms as follows.
A Samnite shield surmounted by an eight-towered mural crown
argent. On a field argent a theodolite sable a chief of gules charged with a
stylized locomotive argent over a river azure wavy argent. The shield supported
dexter and sinister by maize plants proper crossed in base and superimposed by a
scroll gules containing in letters argent the toponym "Rebouças" surrounded by
the date "21 September 1930."
The coat of arms has the following symbolic
interpretation:
a) The Samnite shield used to represent the arms of Rebouças
was the first style of shield introduced in Portugal by French influence,
inherited by Brazilian heraldry as evocative of the colonizing race and main
builder of the nation.
b) The mural crown that surmounts it is the universal
symbol of domains' coats of arms; argent (silver), with eight towers, only five
of them visible in perspective view, it classifies a 2nd rank town, that is, the
seat of a county.
c) Argent (silver) symbolizes peace, friendship, work,
prosperity, purity and religious spirit.
d) The theodolite sable (black)
recalls the work tool of Engineer Antônio Rebouças, the town's namesake.
e)
Sable (black) symbolizes authority, prudence, wisdom, moderation, and firmness.
f) The stylized locomotive argent (silver) recalls the decisive milestone in the
town's development, which was the construction of the São Paulo-Rio Grande
Railway (today Rede Viação Paraná-Santa Catarina), during which Engineer Antônio
Rebouças and his brother André became notorious, justifying the tribute paid by
the town they made flourish.
g) Gules (red) is a symbol of dedication,
patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity, courage and bravery.
h) The water
azure (blue) wavy argent (silver) is reminiscent of the first name of the place,
Rio Azul [Blue River].
i) Azure (blue) is a symbol of justice, nobleness,
perseverance, zeal and loyalty;
j) The maize plants represent products from
the generous and fertile land, crops of great importance for the municipal
income.
k) The scroll gules (red) is inscribed in letters argent with the
toponym "Rebouças" surrounded by the date of inauguration of the municipality
"21 September 1.930".
