The municipality of Pinhão (30,208 inhabitants in 2010; 200,159 ha) is
located 300 km south-west of Curitiba. The municipality is composed of the
districts of Pinhão (seat), Bom Retiro, Faxinal do Céu and Pinhalzinho, the
latter three established by State Law No. 5,149 promulgated on 7 June 1965.
Pinhão was established in the middle of the 19th century by Silvério de
Oliveira and his wife, Antônia Maria de Jesus, as Vila Nova do Pinhão. In 1844,
they transferred the place, under the shortened name of Pinhão, to their
children.
The municipality of Pinhão was established by State Law No. 4,823
promulgated on 18 February 1964, separating from Guarapuava, and inaugurated on
14 March 1965.

The flag of Pinhão is divided into four parts, forming a cross, remembering the
symbol and the Christian spirit of the people.
The coat of arms applied to
the municipal flag represents the municipal government while the white circle
where it is contained represents the town proper, as the seat of the
municipality.
The white stripes superimposed with red stripes represent the
municipal power that extends throughout the territory.
The blue quarters
represent the rural properties while the green ones remind greening fields in
spring promising a profuse harvest.
The coat of arms of Pinhão is
described as follows.
1. The mural crown that surmounts the shield is the
universal symbol of domains' coats of arms; with six towers, only four of them
visible in the drawing, it represents a town, seat of a municipality. The red
openings, due to the meaning of this color, are consistent with the attributes
of the pioneers and community leaders.
2. In the center of the shield, a
black ox symbolizes cattle-breeding, a resource that stands out in municipal
life. The green pines are
characteristic of Brazil's southern region, and are
also the municipality's namesake.
3. The blue stripe dividing the shield from
end to end represents the
water resources of the municipality, which is
bathed by rivers Pinhão, Jordão and Iguaçu, the latter equipped with the Foz do
Areia plant.
4. The blue chief is charged with a silver dove spreading wings,
which is the symbol of the Holy Spirit, the town's patron saint.
5. The
shield is supported by maize, bean and soybean plants representing the main
products of fertile land and supports of the municipal economy.
6. The red
scroll is inscribed in silver letters with "PINHÃO" surrounded by the date of
emancipation, "18-02-1964".
