The municipality of Grande Rios (6,625 inhabitants in 2010; 30,931 ha) is
located 375 km north-west of Curitiba.
Grandes Rios was established in
1951 by Olympio Nogueira Monteiro, who established Imobiliária Cidade de Grandes
Rios and sold plots to colonists who grew coffee. The district of Grandes Rios
was established by State Law No. 5,161 promulgated on 21 June 1965, to be
elevated a municipality, separating from Cāndido de Abreu, by State Law No.
5,514 promulgated on 11 December 1967, and inaugurated on 14 March 1967.

The flag and arms of Grandes Rios are prescribed by
Municipal Law No. 125 promulgated in 1978.
Article 3.
The flag of the
municipality of Grandes Rios was imagined by Dr. João Darci dos Santos,
odontologist, professor and municipal employee, and designed by Dr. Nelson
Bittencourt Prado, from Instituto Histórico Geográfico Paranaense.
Article 4.
The flag of the municipality of Grandes Rios is in proportions 14
units in width on 20 units in length, rectangular, vertically divided in three
parts, the lateral parts red and the central part argent (substituted by white
in the cloth) charged with the municipal coat of arms, in dimension 5 units,
that is one third of the hoist.
§1. The proportions of the municipal flag of
Grandes Rios are those of the national flag.
§2. The flag's reverse and
obverse shall be identical, in compliance with the rules of vexillology.
Article 5.
Red recalls development based on natural resources, resulting from
struggle, audacity, highness, sacrifice, perseverance and glory, represented in
the build-up of a nation unified by Brazilian feeling. White is a symbol of
peace, friendship, purity, innocence, beauty, felicity, integrity, equity and
truth. The coat of arms represents a municipality of most recent formation and
colonization of particular origin, officially inaugurated on 14 March 1967.
Article 8.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Grandes Rios was
imagined by Dr. João Darci dos Santos, odontologist, professor and municipal
employee, designed by Dr. Nelson Bittencourt Prado, from Instituto Histórico
Geográfico Paranaense, and drawn by Benjamin Burigo Filho, a graphic artist from
Paraná.
Article 9.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Grandes
Rios is composed of a rounded-off Portuguese shield, red with a white pall,
looking like a bifide tau cross, charged with four stars voided, one of them,
six-pointed, superimposed to a Paraná pine (Araucaria brasiliensis)
eradicated proper, placed in the pall's center; another three four-pointed stars
voided cantonning the pall. In chief's center an escutcheon with the arms of the
Botelhe. The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent shaped like a stylized
fortress of Nostra Senhora dos Prazeres, which is located in the
north-north-west part of Honey Island (on Morro dos Baleias) at the entrance of
the Bay of Paranaguá.
The shield supported dexter by a branch of Paraná pine
(Araucaria brasiliensis) proper interlaced with wheat (Triticum vulgare) plants
fructed proper and sinister by a branch of coffee (Coffea arabica) fructed
proper interlaced with wheat (Triticum vulgare) plants fructed proper, all tied
in base over a cogwheel or supporting a red scroll inscribed with "14 de Março
de 1967" and the toponym "Grandes Rois", all argent.
