The municipality of Bonito de Santa Fé (10,806 inhabitants in 2010; 22,833
ha) is located 500 km of João Pessoa. Originally inhabited by the Cariri
Indians, the area was colonized in the 18th century by Manoel José and Francisco
Soares, who acquired it from Arruda Câmara. At the end of the 19th century, the
area was threatened by bands of "cangaceiros", the legendary rascals of
Brazilian Nordeste (originally, landless farmers revolted against the
landlords), who were repelled by the Timóteo de Souza family. After the
expelling of the invaders, the regular inhabitants of the place erected a chapel
dedicated to St. Anthony. The village that soon grew up nearby was originally
called Santa Fé, a name subsequently changed to Bonito de Santa Fé.
The
district of Bonito de Santa Fé was part of the municipality of São José de
Piranhas. State Law No. 1,164, adopted on 15 November 1938, changed the name of
São José de Piranhas to Jatobá and erected Bonito de Santa Fé as a separate
municipality, with the shortened name of Bonito. Inaugurated on 1 January 1939,
the municipality was made of the districts of Bonito and Monte Herebe. State
Decree-Law No. 520, adopted on 31 December 1943, re-established the original
name of the place, Bonito de Santa Fé. Monte Herebe was erected as a separate
municipality by State Law No. 2,608, adopted on 5 December 1961. The district of
Viana, part of Bonito de Santa Fé, was established at some date between 2003 and
2007.

The symbols
of Bonita de Santa Fé are provisioned in Article 3.2 of the Municipal
Constitution, adopted on 5 April 1990, as "the flag, the anthem and the coat of
arms, to be prescribed in a separate Law".

The flag of Bonito de Santa Fé is blue with a green triangle bordered in
white and charged with a yellow triangle of same base but lower in height. The
image is shown on the municipal website. Photos of the flag provide evidence
that the shades are too light on the image. The yellow triangle also appears to
be sharper and the white border thinner.
