The coat of arms was adopted through a contest in 2002, where three designs were submitted by students of the primary school Ma. de la O. Marín Mota, under the professor Filemón Rodríguez Jáuregui. The border reads MOMAX at the top; the motto LIBERTAD, TRABAJO, PROGRESO [Liberty, Work, Progress] is read on the sides and bottom. Above is a crown recognizing the Spanish era. The upper section depicts the mountain pillar rock formations found in the community of Los Vela. The lower-left depicts a cattle head over a ploughed valley, signifying cattle-raising and agriculture respectively. The lower-right depicts a hand holding a fish; representing the Caxcán Indians fishing by hand, with a view of the Agua Caliente hot springs in the background.
