The coat of arms was adopted during the time of Municipal President Adulfo Frías García (1983-1985); along with him, others involved in the project were José Caminos Serna, Conrado Hernández Márquez, Elvira Ventura Lara, Beatriz Arellano Serna, and Audomaro Mota Rivera. It was adopted because of a call from the state for the municipalities to adopt a coat of arms, which the state participated in. The shield carries, in its lower section, a border that reads TIERRA DE HUANOCH, the last indigenous priest. At the top, an image of the principal plaza and municipal building. In the lower-left, the Indian warrior Huanol, son of the chief Huataca. To the lower-right, an image of Saint Francis of Assisi in his robe, patron saint of the Municipality.
