Overview

Dunapataj is a large village in Kalocsa district of Bács-Kiskun county.
Dunapataj and the neighboring Szelidi Lake area were inhabited early on. During the time of the Hungarian conquest, the Hungarians settled early on this slightly hilly region, which was still heavily indented with swamps and waters. The area was occupied by the central tribe, the Árpád tribe. The local name Pataj also comes from this era. The name of the village was first mentioned in documents in 1145.
Pataj was the property of the Pataj Zubor family in 1421. Between 1409 and 1872, it had the status of a market town, as evidenced by a charter from 1639, which mentioned it as a market town.
The market town survived the Turkish occupation relatively well, it was not destroyed.
Pataj changed hands several times in the 1700s. The settlement was for a time the seat of a Reformed bishop.
At the beginning of the 20th century, until the county reorganization of 1950, it belonged to the Dunavecse district of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun county.

The Flag

The flag of the settlement is white with coat of arms placed in the center of the flag. The name of the municipality is written under the shield with black Gothic letters. Two sides of the flag are decorated with red and green triangles (wolf-teeth). The flag ratio is 1:2.
The flag was adopted by Local Government Decree 5/1999. (IV.15.) issued on 15 April 1999.

The Local Government Decree doesn’t define the flag properly, but images I found on Internet, show only one version of the flag. The coat of arms points upwards in that case when it is attached to the flagstaff (hoist). So, it seems that the original flag is the vertical variant, but Decree allows to use it in both versions.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of the municipality is an asymmetrical blue shield leaning to the left. It depicts a golden-brown truncated tree branch, the two side branches of which are also truncated. The branch is located diagonally in the shield and points towards the truncated shield corner. A green (linden) leaf grows from the base of the right-hand branch, which points towards the intact shield corner. The tree branch is not homogeneously colored, but is colored to resemble wood. The veins are visible on the leaf.
The coat of arms was adopted by the same Local Government Decree.
