Description of the crest

Between the 13 March 1891 and 14 December 1994, the municipality of Oakleigh existed in Melbourne's south-east metropolitan area. Having seceded from the larger more rural "Shire of Oakleigh", the town area initially became the "Borough of Oakleigh" until 19 February 1924, when it became a "Town", and then to "City" status on 2 August 1927.

From possibly the second half of 1897, the Borough of Oakleigh used a slightly varied Australasian Federation movement's unofficial "Australian" coat-of-arms as its formal Crest. This was very common by many municipalities across each of Australia's then six colonies, as support for the Federation of the Australian colonies grew. My reason for this possible date is that on 3 June 1897 a formal branch of the pro-Federation, Australian Natives Association, was established in Oakleigh. The main variation was changing the ribbon text from "Advance Australia" to "Advance Oakleigh". The entire coat-of-arms was encircled with a ribbon containing the text, "BOROUGH OF OAKLEIGH" at the top and "CONSTITUTED MARCH 13th., 1891" at the bottom.

This "Advance Oakleigh" Crest design continued to be used until 14 December 1994, with only municipality status being changed. The lower "Constituted" date remained the same. Please refer to the images of Oakleigh's Borough and City Crests. It should be noted that a further variant of these "Australian Federation" coat-of-arms was adopted by the neighbouring Shire of Mulgrave (formerly Shire of Oakleigh), either since the same 1897 date or in early 1954, depending upon different historical sources you use. It was often discussed / debated which municipality first used incorporated this coat-of-arms into their respective Crests.

In March 2023, after years of searching requests, Monash City Council Staff located the 1 metre diameter, cast iron, City of Oakleigh Crest, that had been on the external wall of the Oakleigh Council Office. This had disappeared after the amalgamation. This has now been mounted inside the former Oakleigh Council Chambers. Please refer to the photo of this particular Crest.

Dating from possibly the post WWII years a metal Mayoral Car Pennant was used, showing the City of Oakleigh Crest on a mid-blue coloured field.

In August 1977, the City of Oakleigh celebrated its 50th. anniversary. Possibly, as part of commemoration, a new City of Oakleigh Flag was introduced, as both a full-size flag (see top of page) and as a Mayoral Car Flag. This flag consisted of the Oakleigh Crest, in full colour, centered on a white field. Please refer to the photos of these flags.

On the 14 December 1994, the City of Oakleigh was amalgamated with the neighbouring City of Waverley (formerly the Shire of Mulgrave), to form the new City of Monash. This new municipality covers all the area as the original 1871 Shire of Oakleigh, plus a small additional area extending westward.
