The flag of the "33 Orientales" (eastern 33) is [in horizontal
stripes of] blue, white and red with the motto "Libertad o Muerte"
("Freedom or Death") on the center in black.

in 1819-1820 in Paraguay, at

Lavalleja took the flag, which waving upon the wind shown its three
horizontal bands sky-blue [celeste], white and deep scarlet red
[punzó] with its motto in the middle one of
"LIBERTY OR DEATH"
and with moving voice, the future hero of Sarandí said these words:
«To win or die, comrades». Raising the swords all swered to free the
motherland from those who were enslaving her.
