It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field (village rank).

The arms are Or a cork oak Vert at dexter and a wheat sheaf Vert at sinister and in chief an open book Argent bound Gules and in base a flagon Gules. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "FREGUESIA DE VIANA DO ALENTEJO"

Viana do Alentejo Commune is one of the three communes of the synonym municipality (q.v.). This commune had 2828 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 97,98 km².
