It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny (meaning city rank) of green and yellow.

The coat of arms is argent, a fess sable charged with three pomegranates shelled or and fruited gules, between three grape bunches vert, two in chief and one in base. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA
NOVA DE FAMALICÃO".

Flag and arms were appoved on 14 August 1985, the former versions on 21 November 1935.

Vila Nova de Famalicão municipality had 116 560 inhabitants in 1990, and it is divided in 34 communes, covering 209 km². It belongs to the Braga District and to the old province of Minho.
