Meaning:
Staff and hat are referring to St. James the Elder, name giver of the commune.

Shield Azure with base wavy of Argent and Azure, two bread paddles Or in saltire, surrounded by a 5-point star Or in chief, a wheat ear Or at dexter, a rice ear Argent at sinister and a millstone Argent above the base wavy. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and short white scroll, in Bénard Guedes style, with inscription in black capitals "UL".
Meaning:
The millwheel is referring to the many former watermills alongside the rivers Antuã and Ul, being the origin of modern industrialisation. The ears are representing agriculture, especially the cultivation of cereals. The paddles are referring to the local high-quality bakeries. The base wavy is representing Ul River. The star is an attribute of St. Mary of Ul, as Our Lady of Assumption being the local patron saint.
