The oak tree (Port.: azinheira) is a canting element and representing the chapel of Our Lady of Conception, the local patron saint. The chapel should have been erected on another place, but the image of the saint, which had been placed there, mysteriously disappeared a few times, always appearing between the branches of an oak tree, where finally the chapel was erected.

Azinheira dos Barros e São Mamede do Sádão Commune is one of the four communes of the Grândola municipality (q.v.); it had 1141 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 172.5 km². Azinheira dos Barros, until the 19th century simply called Barros, was first mentioned in 1513. In 1855 São Mamede do Sádão, being then part of Alcácer do Sal municipality, was dissolved and united with Azinheira dos Barros commune.
