It was a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow field.
The mural crown then had only three visible towers (village rank).

Shield Vert with base wavy of Argent and Azure, an arcade of three arches Argent masoned Sable, in chief a 5-point star Or.
Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "FREGUESIA DE ARGANIL".
Meaning:
The star is an attribute of Our Lady of Mont´Alto, to whom there is great devotion among the local people.
But she is not the local patron saint (that is St.Gens). The arches are representing the chapel of St.Peter, being part of the local heritage.
The base wavy is representing the importance of tourism and the beauty of the local landscape as well, furthermore they are symbolizing the location on the banks of Alva River.
