Józefów - urban commune, Otwock County, Mazowieckie Voivodship.
Józefów is a town in Poland, located in Masovian Voivodeship, in Otwock
County. It lies about 15 km southeast of downtown Warsaw and is a part
of that city's metropolitan area. Located on a picturesque confluence of
Vistula and Świder rivers, it is home to one landscape reserve and three
natural reservation zones. As of 2006 it had 18,157 inhabitants.
Jozefow was the site of a massacre of Polish Jews in the early days
of Hitler's Final Solution during World War II. German Reserve Police Battalion
101 were the main participants of the killing of over 1,500 Jews.
I spent a lot of time there in my youth - swimming in the Świder River
and horsing around in the thick pine forest nearby. Nice and pleasant town.
Present Arms and flag adopted on April 29, 2004 (resolution # 186/IV/04).
"Arms: a shield divided horizontally in two parts. The upper part further
divided vertically into two parts.
On the left field of the upper part (red) there is a golden Aesculapian
snake winded around a golden cane.
On the right field (white) there is a green pine tree with the golden
sun peeking above it.
On the bottom part of the shield (blue), separated from the upper one
by the gold line, there is a legend "JÓZEFÓW" written in white letters.
Flag is in white, red, blue and yellow colors."
