The
flag of Bydgoszcz was involved in the "Over the Brdą" recital offered in July 2018 by
Bydgoszcz-born, multi-talented Maja Babyszka (19 years old).
Maja played
piano and sang in a basket hanging to a crane and gently swinging over river
Brdą, in Bydgoszcz's historical center.
HHanging down from the basket, the
flag was dropped into the river when the crane lowered down the basket. Maja was
not dropped, but I hope she will consider this opportunity for her next
performance.
Nobody seems to have complained for flag desecration. The
dropping, indeed, could be seen as a symbolic way to emphasize the significance
of the river for the development of the town.

The city's arms have been used in their present form since the 14th
century.
Jarig Bakker,, 22 Mar 2001The coat of arms of Bydgoszcz depicts a city
gate with three towers, a raised portcullis and half-opened gate.
In
ancient times, however, the gates were closed and strictly guarded. People who
came to the gates of Bydgoszcz and did not get a hospitable welcome, turned
around and headed to nearby Toruń. That was the reason merchants from distant
parts, travelers and rich knights bypassed the city that was unfriendly and
unwelcoming for strangers. The citizens of Bydgoszcz suffered from that fact,
because they lacked overseas goods and news from the world. In this situation
the town councillors decided that the gates should always be open. This was also
the image they ordered to be presented on the city’s coat of arms and since then
it has been clear that the inhabitants of Bydgoszcz willingly host guests.
