The blazon is: På blå bunn en sølv stjerne med seks odder. Or in English
Azure a mullet of six argent.
The coat of arms was approved by the crownprince-regent's resolution of 8 March
1957 and again by the royal resolution of 14 March 1964 after joining of
municipalities. It was drawn by Hallvard Trætteberg.
The [c2j87] explains that when the issue of the
municipal symbols arose in 1938 the idea of a six-pointed star was already
present among the alternatives. It was supposed to represent Steinkjer as the
center of the Inner Trondelag and a meeting point of six ways. However, it was
only in 1957 on the occasion of the centenary celebrations that it was formally
proposed.
When the municipalities were joined the symbolism is explained by the center of
the star to stand for the old Steinkjer and the point stand for the six
surrounding municipalities that were joined to it (Beitstad, Egge, Kvam, Ogndal,
Sparbu and Stod).
[c2j87] also noted that around 1900 the
muncipality used a symbol with crossed wedge and ax.
