adopted 6 Feb 1972; design: Kl. Sierksma
The adopted flag for Hengelo-Gelderland, a Sierksma-design, is 'In blue
the boy of the arms (on 1/3L) with his cornucopia, at the hoist as well
as the fly a white triangle'
See Vexilla Nostra VIII-nr.56-p.62, VN XX-nr.140-p.181 and VN.XXIII-nr.156-p.55.

On 1 January 2004 the new municipality of Bronckhorst (Gelderland) was formed out of the merger of Hengelo (Gld), Hummelo en Keppel, Steenderen, Vorden and Zelhem.
The old flag of Hengelo, in Gelderland province, is described by Sierksma,
in Nederlands Vlaggenboek, 1962 [sie62]:
"Two equally wide horizontal stripes of white and blue, with a countercharged
ring with a diameter equal to the height of one stripe.
This flag has not been adopted yet, but was designed at the invitation
of Mayor and Aldermen.
The colors are derived from the municipal arms.
The ring symbolizes the horn of plenty from the Coat of Arms and horse-shoes,
reminding of the traditional horse-markets, held here since 1658. In this
circle one can also see the heraldic symbol of a loaf, used here to remind
of the folkloristic bread-distribution on Ascension Day."
I don't know whether this flag has been officially adopted or whether
it ever has flown. Sierksma does not mention a very obvious reason for
including the circle: the old flag of Hengelo in
Overijssel was hor. blue over white; if Hengelo (Ge) used a white over
blue flag there might have been some confusion, especially when hoisted
upside-down :-)

The ring in the not-adopted flagdesign if Sierksma was a flag-abstraction
for the cornucopia in the arms: seen in the front.
The adopted flag for Hengelo-Gelderland, also a Sierksma-design, is
'In blue the boy of the arms (on 1/3L) with his cornucopia, at the hoist
as well as the fly a white triangle'
See Vexilla Nostra VIII-nr.56-p.62, VN XX-nr.140-p.181 and VN.XXIII-nr.156-p.55.
