Located in Tsukuba City Ibaraki Prefecture and established in 1973.
The university flag has purple background with a white emblem in the center.
The emblem, in the form of three paulownia leaves arranged in a row, above which are five flowers in the center and three on each side, began with the student emblem of Tokyo Higher Normal School, which was revised in 1903, and was carried over to the student badge of Tokyo University of Education, produced in 1949.
In 1974, the University Council approved the use of the paulownia leaf as the emblem, continuing the tradition of Tokyo University of Education. As is the case with traditional Japanese emblems in general, there are many variations of the figure known as the "five-three paulownia," but the emblem of the university is unique in that only the flower part is represented by the "shadow" (outline).
